Charles Co. Commissioners Retreat on Mallows Bay

Charles Co. Commissioners Retreat on Mallows Bay: Community Leaders Partnership with Military, State and Federal Officials Pressure Major Resolution Change

October 17, 2017- In an unexpected turn of events, the Board of Charles County Commissioners backpedaled on the previously county adopted resolution for the Mallows Bay federal designation. On March 7, 2017, the Board in a 3-2 show of support voted to approve the recommendation for extension of the Mallows Bay boundaries beyond the original 18 square miles, which was endorsed by community residents, organizations and state leaders. “Extending the boundaries would have a devastating effect on Naval Support Indian Head operations, 3,500+ employees, $320 million in employee compensation and $400 million in contracting revenues,” reported Brian Klass, Chairman, Military Alliance Council, earlier in September alongside Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford. Rutherford encouraged the support for the base, calling it “an economic vitality not only for the region, but for the state of Maryland and our nation’s defense.” After addressing a group of community leaders, which included the leadership of the Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS®, Lt. Gov. Rutherford toured the existing boundaries by boat and met with base employees.

SMAR leaders along with representatives from the offices of Senator Ben Cardin and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, leaders of the Charles County Chamber of Commerce, Charles County NAACP, Tri-County Council, military officials, and business owners were able to discuss a variety of county issues and its effect on both the business environment and housing in Charles County. “The real community partnership began with the watershed conservation district issue in November 2016 and it has been an awakening. The community will continue to make positive change like tonight and again in November 2018.”  Theresa Kuhns, Government Affairs Director, SMAR.

On behalf of the Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS® and our 1,700 REALTOR® and Affiliate members, we would like to thank the Charles County Board of Commissioners for unanimously passing the new resolution and listening to its constituency by supporting the Naval Support Indian Head mission, its employees and families. The community of Indian Head and the surrounding region are directly affected by these types of decisions and the county’s support will continue to help one of our largest employers thrive and grow as it supports the nation’s defenses.
